Using explicit teaching to support young VET learners
Recorded 28.2.24
For young VET learners to be successful in their training, they need to understand why they are learning something, and how this connects to what they already know. They need more than just the content.
While excellent adult learning principles, this does require more explicit teaching instructions for younger VET learners. Young learners need to develop a range of self-directed learning skills, which explicit teaching provides.
For VET trainers who are experts in their field, and experienced learners themselves, this may take a conscious effort to unpack their tacit or ‘unconscious competence’ when teaching young VET learners new key concepts and approaches.
Explicit teaching can also help to develop young VET learners’ language, literacy and number (LLN) skills when using industry specific terminology and numerical processes and concepts.
