Practical strategies useful for ALL students

This session will include an overview of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and how neurodiverse students may experience the VET environment, including challenges with learning, social interaction, communication and behaviour.  It will also touch on what inclusive practice is - including the laws that underpin it - and what reasonable adjustment is.

Jane will include a discussion on the challenges students with autism may experience accessing teaching and learning, and before moving into how VET practitioners can implement inclusive strategies to ensure participation and engagement - before, at the start of a session, during, and after a session. These strategies can assist neurodiverse students as well as be helpful for neurotypical students,

Intended outcomes:

  • Understanding of the specific impact of ASD on neurodiverse students

  • Challenges and barriers to learning
