This Live Meet Up (LMU)

Day: Friday 5 September 2025

Time: 1pm AEST (Qld time)

Topic: Discover how work-based training happens in the construction and infrastructure industries in New Zealand

This session welcomes guest speaker Jackie Messam.

Jackie has recently completed a ConCOVE Tūhara funded project to discover how work-based training happens in the construction and infrastructure industries in New Zealand. Apprentices typically spend around 70% of their time (or more) learning on-job, but how are work-based trainers identified and supported? At this event, she'll be sharing her findings, recommendations and ideas for recognising and supporting work-based trainers across different industries.

Topics:

  • Who is training our apprentices?
  • Why do they choose to do it?
  • What skills and knowledge are needed to become an effective work-based trainer?
  • A framework to easily recognise and support effective work-based training.
  • Opportunities for tertiary education providers to better support employers with training.
  • Suggestions for employers about how to encourage a training mindset at work.
  • Existing (and often free!) training solutions that will support employers and work-based trainers.

Note: ConCOVE Tūhara is one of two Centres of Vocational Excellence set up by the NZ government in 2020 to support the Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE).
