Keys for learning - Generation Z style!

Generally considered to be those born between 1995 and 2009, Generation Z - or Gen Z - are often described as "digital natives" due to growing up in a world where the internet, social media, and mobile technology are integral parts of their lives.

The ubiquity of technology in the lives of Gen Z has knock-on implications for how they prefer to interact with education. Gen Z are said to thrive on interactive and personalised learning experiences, often preferring online courses and technology-driven approaches; all of which are very different from the style of learning most VET trainers, who, at the average age of 50-ish and thereby falling into a different generation altogether, experienced in their formal education.

This session is the start of a five-session series specifically designed to help VET trainers and assessors know and understand the optimal ways to engage and support student cohorts from Gen Z.

As educational approaches have shifted over time, this session opens the series with the goal of showing how to equip Gen Z students with the keys for learning. It underscores the importance of knowing how to develop the skills to learn how to learn, and delves into how we can develop and support Gen Z students to:

  • Increase their own awareness about how they learn best, and
  • Adjust their own learning strategies as necessary to achieve their study goals

In uncovering the keys for effective learning, in this session we discuss:

  • The benefits of building meta-cognition skills in Gen Z students
  • How to promote development of meta-cognitive skills in Gen Z students to assist them with the “learning how to learn” process
  • The teaching and learning strategies that will help you identify and support Gen Z in a way that is suited to their needs
  • The specific teaching strategies you can use that will help equip Gen Z students with the keys for learning
