Assessment Marking Guide Design Do's and Don'ts
Recorded 28 April 2025
Assessment marking guides are the tool that directs assessors to understand what is going to be acceptable as ‘satisfactory’ performance. They also contain the instructions and parameters for conducting assessment and must be easily understood by all users.
This vital assessor-only document is a necessary component of an RTO’s assessment system and together with the assessment mapping document, forms a critical foundation for evidence of how well an assessment tool will cover unit of competency evidence requirements.
Therefore, the marking guide must balance compliance and utility.
Join this session to see the do’s and don’t’s of assessment marking guides. We’ll look at:
The principles of robust, reliable and user-friendly documents
Factors that undermine the compliance of the tool
How to ensure your marking guide does what it is intended to do
Common errors to avoid in the development of marking guides
As a bonus (and because it crosses over), we'll have a component within this session that looks at key inclusions for the student assessment document.
The Assessment Tool Design Master Class series draws on Michelle’s extensive experience as a VET assessment development and pre-use validation expert. The same expertise called on by some of VET's biggest providers to support quality in their own operations.
Pitched at intermediate level to support people who develop and/or validate assessment tools, the series brings us six (6) sessions about the do’s and don’ts of vital components:
Assessment mapping document
Assessment marking guide design
Observation checklists
Knowledge evidence assessment
Performance evidence assessment (including Foundation Skills)
Instruments to allow evidence collected by other parties for assessor judgement
Each session will run for approximately 45-60 minutes including audience Q&A
