We're born to do it

Learning is one of the things we start doing from birth, even before we can explicitly remember doing it. It is an inbuilt mechanism for survival and growth, and if we’re lucky, it’s one of the things we’ll continue to do throughout all stages of life.

However, as we transition throughout our life stages, our reasons for learning shift, also shifting our appetite for knowledge via various means.

As educators, we must understand how these shifts impact the drive and motivation of adult learners and how we can effectively respond to secure and sustain engagement.

And crucially, as part of that, it helps to unpack our own conceptions of what learning is, and how our own understanding of this fundamental human process may be impacting our delivery of it.

In this 75 minute session, we’ll:

  • Workshop an answer to the question “what is learning?” with a view to understanding how it works, and what practices of our own may be potentially blocking the process for learners
  • Discuss how our own student experiences influence our teaching practice
  • Explore ways to transition into a model widely accepted as a successful one for adult learners
  • See how to tap into holistic learning principles when designing our learning environments

Importantly, we’ll also talk about the necessary pre-requisites to setting up a successful learning environment.
