The ultimate challenge – how do we spark and sustain student engagement?

For any educator in the VET sector, ensuring students are engaged with the content and progressing through toward completion is one of the main drivers.

But what happens when it’s not solely a matter of engagement? When other, necessary precursors are missing?

In this 75 minute session we unpack what the hidden curriculum is and the implicit expectations it brings by adulthood, potentially impacting those in a formal adult learning environment. We will see how, despite best intentions, the effects of the hidden curriculum may be impacting learners’ willingness to participate, and their feelings of safety to do so. We also explore strategies to mitigate this type of situation.

The session will also focus on the necessary ingredients for learner engagement, and how we can support and encourage that in our training environments.

Join this session to:

  • Unpack what the hidden curriculum is in the context of adult learning and why it may be hindering learner progression
  • Reflect on the principles of psychological safety and learn a simple, yet effective way to embed this within our teaching practice
  • Get strategies to cultivate learner agency and ownership of their own learning journey
