This Community Matters Professional Discussion

Day: Friday 27 February 2026

Time: 1pm AEST (Qld time)

Topic: AI-generated VET assessments

Can AI help us design assessments that feel more relevant, more accessible, and still uphold quality and integrity?

Guest speaker Karl Hartley shares insights into the research conducted to explore how artificial intelligence can be used to generate assessments that are:

  • Personalised to each learner
  • Accessible for diverse needs
  • Rigorous enough to uphold quality standards
  • Contextualised to adapt to learner diversity while respecting cognitive science principles and those of assessment validity.

Hear about why generic approaches fail and what's required to get the results you want!

The session is scheduled to run for approximately 30 minutes plus 15 minutes of audience Q&A

As a Community Matters discussion, this is a special event for Education Matters and RPL Matters members.

About Karl

Karl Hartley - Director of AI Learning Strategy and Implementation, Epic Learning; AI Researcher & Vocational Education Specialist

Karl has spent 20+ years in learning and development, working across telecommunications (Telecom NZ/Spark), industry training (Competenz), and educational technology consulting. These days his focus is AI-generated assessments for vocational education — figuring out what works, what doesn't, and how to keep humans in meaningful control.

As Technical Lead for the ConCOVE Tūhura project, Karl ran New Zealand's largest research study on AI-generated assessments. The team tested whether AI could produce assessments that meet national moderation standards. The short answer: yes, but only with the right methodology.

Karl founded Hotloop.ai and Epic Learning, a vocational education development company. Karl is Ngāti Porou.
