'Seven Sizzling Secrets of Successful Study' - A model to promote independent, resilient, successful learners

Adult students who are new to being a learner or who have re-entered the learning environment after some time away, may struggle with finding their feet and establishing themselves as confident, successful participants in a formal learning environment.

If this happens, chances are we can expect to experience difficulty in motivating our learners to participate, see reduced engagement from them, and at worst, have them drop out of their course. Understanding why this might happen and how to overcome it is key!

Fortunately, there are some simple steps we can take as educators to identify potential barriers, mitigate them, and support our students on their learning journey.

This session takes a back-to-basics approach and introduces a proven framework that you can use to help set your students up for success.

Suitable for teachers looking to enhance their foundational teaching skills and/or confirm current practice, the session will explore how to create with your learners an environment in which expectations are clear, everyone feels comfortable and confident to contribute, and learners can experience individual success.

Key points to be covered include:

  • Assumptions of adult learning theory - and the impact of time gone by on these
  • Understanding adult learners, including motivation(s)
  • Using the ‘Seven Sizzling Secrets of Successful Study’ model
  • What the ‘hidden curriculum’ is and how the ‘Seven’ can support it
  • Highlighting expectations to co-create a safe environment
  • What might be ‘threatening’ to adult learners and how to mitigate those worries
  • Getting ‘buy in’ from students and using that to leverage learner engagement

  • “I already set student up from the very start but realised there is still so much more I could do.”
  • “Many key ideas around adult learning principles and growth mindset have been in my own teaching practice for many years. I am pleased to learn they are still current and relevant.”

  • “it's a good refresher training which reminds me to pay attention and be mindful again to the learning aspects and barriers to two different generations and types of cohorts.”
  • “Nothing in this PD constituted new thinking for me but it's always great to be reminded and to have your values around effective adult learning re-invigorated. I practice from knowledge and understanding of these principles, but the session has me keen to re-prioritise certain classroom practices and emphasise certain learner experiences, that address, for example, fear, the hidden curriculum, avoiding assumptions and the experiential differences between adults from different generations.”
