Move beyond passive content and give learners more opportunities to think, contribute, practise and apply their learning online

Keeping learners engaged online takes more than adding a quiz at the end of a module or introducing another digital tool. Learners are more likely to engage when they are actively doing something with what they are learning, whether that means responding to a question, solving a problem, sharing an idea, making a decision or applying a skill.

For trainers and assessors working with prescribed content, creating active learning can feel difficult without redesigning the whole unit. But even small changes to the way an activity is structured can shift learners from simply consuming information to actively thinking, contributing and practising.

This session explores practical ways to build active digital learning into existing delivery. You’ll look at different types of online activities, from quick polls and knowledge checks to scenarios, collaborative tasks, peer learning and reflection, and consider which approaches work best for different learning purposes.

Through practical examples, you’ll also see how familiar tools such as Padlet, Mentimeter, Miro, shared documents and online meeting platforms can support these activities. The focus is not on using more technology, but on choosing simple activities and tools that give learners something meaningful to do.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify opportunities to make existing online learning more active and participatory
  • Match different types of digital activities to the learning purpose and learner needs
  • Design simple online activities that encourage learners to think, contribute, practise and apply
  • Select digital tools that support the activity rather than drive the learning design

Participants will receive a complimentary copy of “Active Digital Learning: Activity Ideas and Design Guide”:

  • A practical guide with adaptable ideas for turning existing content into more active online learning. It includes examples of polls, scenarios, collaborative activities, peer learning, reflection and practice tasks, together with a simple framework for matching the learning purpose, activity and digital tool.
