Help learners recognise what they can do and communicate their skills with confidence

Learners can have valuable skills and still struggle to explain them. Ask someone whether they have strong problem-solving, communication or collaboration skills and they may hesitate, even though they demonstrate these capabilities every day through study, work and life.

This is a skills literacy challenge. Learners need more than skills themselves; they need the language and confidence to recognise those skills, connect them to real experiences, identify evidence and explain their capabilities to others.

This session explores practical ways trainers and assessors can help learners become more skills literate. We’ll look at how to help learners move from describing what they did to identifying what that demonstrates they can do, and how everyday experiences from learning, work, volunteering and life can provide evidence of transferable capabilities.

Through practical examples and simple reflection activities, you’ll explore ways to help learners build a clearer picture of their capabilities and communicate them for employment, further learning, recognition and career development.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain what skills literacy is and why it matters for learners
  • Help learners identify transferable skills from their learning, work and life experiences
  • Support learners to connect skills claims with meaningful examples and evidence
  • Help learners articulate their capabilities in language they can use beyond the classroom

Participants will receive a complimentary copy of “Making Skills Visible: Skills Literacy Guide”:

  • A practical guide with prompts and activities to help learners move from experience to skill to evidence and articulation. It includes simple ways to identify transferable skills across learning, work and life, build stronger evidence for skills claims, and communicate capabilities for employment and further learning.
